Distance
(Ali Handal)
I kinda like knowin’ the phone’s always for me
I kinda like not needing a referee
I kinda like taking control of the remote
I kinda like casting the one and only vote
but still, but still…
From a distance the sweet outweighs the bitter
and the right outweighs the wrong
From a distance I think I’ll forgive you
and I won’t stay away too long
I kinda like no compromises
I kinda like not explaining why that is
I kinda like lettin’ down my guard
I kinda like not always trying so damn hard
but still, but still…
From a distance the sweet outweighs the bitter
and the right outweighs the wrong
From a distance I think I’ll forgive you
and I won’t stay away too long
I kinda like the way you hold me when I cry
I’d kinda like to give us one more try
THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG:
I wrote Distance one night while my boyfriend was out of town. We hadn’t had the smoothest of relationships, but having some space between us was a good way for me to get a little perspective on things.
This was one of those songs that practically wrote itself. It came to me all at once and I was so excited about it that I recorded it onto a cassette and sent it to my boyfriend while he was still out of town.
It didn’t go over very well. When he first listened to the cassette, all he got from the song was that I kinda liked having our apartment to myself. I think the verses freaked him out so much that he missed the message of the chorus, which is that even though I liked being alone, I missed him and wanted to work things out.
